Djakadam odds appeal over Sizing John bets among 2017 John Durkan Chase tips
Hurdle Bet’s 2017 John Durkan Chase tips from Punchestown say back Djakadam odds over Sizing John bets for the 2m 4f feature on December 10.
Djakadam is already a dual winner of the Grade 1 John Durkan Memorial Chase at Punchestown, so can land the hat-trick this Sunday (14:05).
Trained by Willie Mullins, the eight-year-old landed the spoils in the last two race renewals.
Connections have used the John Durkan to great effect as a reappearance run for the Rich and Susannah Ricci owned horse.
In 2015, Djakadam made most of the running on similarly heavy going that he gets here and bolted up by 12 lengths.
He went on to be a 4 1/2 lengths runner-up in the 2016 Cheltenham Gold Cup behind Don Cossack.
Two-time race winner
In last year’s John Durkan, Djakadam delivered again on more yielding ground and found plenty for pressure late on for a 1 1/4 lengths victory over Outlander.
He also had the re-opposing Sub Lieutenant a further a 1 1/4 lengths back in third.
Although then third in the 3m Lexus Chase at Leopardstown over Christmas and then fourth to Sizing John at this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, Djakadam pushed that rival all the way last time out at the Punchestown Festival.
Had he not pecked when ahead at the last, then Sizing John may not have got up in the final strides to deny Djakadam by a short-head.
The pair are now rated just 1lb apart and the selection’s Grade 1 winning form at this trip is a huge plus.
Djakadam also has a better record fresh, so I think over a shorter distance that he can reverse the Cheltenham and Punchestown Gold Cup form here.
Sizing John bets command respect
The John Durkan also serves as a belated return to action for Jessica Harrington’s stable star, the aforementioned Sizing John.
Owned by the late Alan and Ann Potts, the original plan for this seven-year-old was a crack at the Jockey Club’s £1,000,000 bonus and Staying Chasers’ Triple Crown.
Connections withdrew Sizing John from the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock last month, however, and this became his first target of the season.
Although the highest rated in this line-up with an official mark of 168, he was beaten on reappearance last season.
Does the trip suit?
Sizing John has had just two career runs over two-and-a-half miles, winning a Grade 3 at Thurles in the last of those and successfully stepped up since.
His turn of foot is unexposed at this trip but, given how he only just got up and beat Djakadam when previously in action at Punchestown, I think he’s worth taking on.
All Cheltenham Gold Cup winners command respect, however, so Sizing John bets hold plenty of appeal despite the drop back.
On official ratings, the others in the field all have plenty to find on this deadly duo.
