Whisper makes noise as live outsider in Cheltenham Gold Cup betting

Hurdle Bet report on latest Whisper odds in the 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup betting after his narrow second in the Ladbrokes Trophy.

Whisper may have lost out narrowly in a titanic tussle with Total Recall in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury, but in doing so he emerged as a live outsider in the 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup betting.

BetVictor now have Whisper odds of 16/1 for the 3m 2f showpiece chase of the Cheltenham Festival.

Nicky Henderson’s nine-year-old travelled beautifully throughout in the hands of Davy Russell at Newbury and looked set for glory when taking up the running three from home going strongly.

Totall Recall then emerged from the chasing pack and the pair battled all the way up the run-in before Willie Mullins’ charge got up close home to prevail by a neck.

They pulled nine-lengths clear of the third home as Whisper ran a stormer in attempting to give an up-and-coming chaser 14lb.

Huge run off same mark as Denman

He ran off the same mark (161) as when Denman got the first of his two Ladbrokes Trophy wins in 2007, before going on to win the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup where he beat Kauto Star by 13 lengths.

Whisper also carried 6lb more than last year’s winner Native River, who went on to finish a fine third to Sizing John in the Gold Cup.

A gamble surrounding Whisper odds in the 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup betting emerged after his Ladbrokes Trophy second.

That puts into context what a huge run Whisper produced, especially as it was just his seventh start over fences.

He was won three three of those, and made the frame on every other occasion.

    Proven form at Cheltenham

They include when beaten just a nose by stable companion Might Bite in the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival back in March, and that rival is currently a top priced 7/1 joint-favourite with Paddy Power for the Gold Cup.

That suggests Whisper is decent value at the current 16/1 on offer, and another plus is that he has a good record at Cheltenham.

His run behind Might Bite when a two-length second in another Grade 1 over 3m 1f at Aintree suggests that he should also not have a problem coping with the extra furlong in the Gold Cup.

So, taking everything into account, punters backing Whisper odds have latched onto a tempting each-way punt for chasing’s blue riband contest.
