Horse racing at Newbury
There has been horse racing in the Newbury area of Berkshire since 1805, but the first recorded meeting at the Greenham site where the racecourse is located came 100 years later. As the home of the valuable 3m 2f Grade 3 Ladbrokes Trophy (formerly the Hennessy Gold Cup), a two-day meeting on the last weekend of November or first in December called the Winter Carnival, Newbury hosts various races on that card which can give early indicators about the Cheltenham Festival. It comes as no surprise, then, that Hurdle Bet coverage of horse racing at Newbury chiefly surrounds the Winter Carnival. There’s also the Grade 2 Denman Chase and supporting card in February containing other quality racing, but that contest, like the Ladbrokes Trophy, can serve as a key trial for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the centrepiece of and day 4 feature at the Festival. Newbury also contains flat racing throughout the summer, including the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes over 1m that is open to horses aged four and over. That is the most illustrious of a dozen contests to enjoy Group status at this track. Here at Hurdle Bet, we’re concerned with both flat and jumps action. Many greats have followed up Hennessy heroism with Festival wins, including Arkle and Denman.
Nifty Newbury betting tips at Hurdle Bet
Get the juiciest Newbury betting tips courtesy of Hurdle Bet, as the Hennessy Gold Cup meeting is a huge indicator for Festival flutters. Coneygree took the Grade 2 Berkshire Novices’ Chase, called the Fuller’s London Pride Novices’ Chase for sponsorship reasons, in 2014 en route to Cheltenham Gold Cup glory. He also followed up the same season in the Denman Chase at Newbury before his Prestbury Park triumph. This year’s Ladbrokes Trophy winner, Total Recall, was a rare victory for Ireland and first official winner for all-conquering trainer Willie Mullins. He feels his horse is better suited to the Grand National at Aintree, than the Cheltenham Gold Cup though. Colin Tizzard has enjoyed plenty of recent Newbury success with the likes of Thistlecrack, Native River and Elegant Escape scoring Grade prizes over the last two or three years. Newbury betting tips really do shape the Festival picture, and Hurdle Bet keep a firm eye on that.
